How Instagram handles styled text

Instagram treats these characters as ordinary text, which is why they survive the paste when a real typeface could not. Three limits are worth knowing before you build a bio around one. Your bio is capped at 150 characters and every decorative symbol counts toward it, so wrapped styles with hearts or sparkles cost more room than combining-mark styles that attach to letters you already typed. Instagram trims long stacks of combining marks, so heavy glitch text often reappears tamer once saved. And your @handle accepts only basic Latin letters, numbers, periods and underscores — styled text goes in your display name instead.

Instagram fonts FAQ

How do I change the font in my Instagram bio?

Type your text above, tap a style to copy it, then open Instagram, go to Edit Profile, tap the Bio field and paste. The styling holds because you pasted characters, not a font.

Why can I not use a fancy font in my Instagram username?

Handles are restricted to a-z, 0-9, periods and underscores so that profiles stay searchable and linkable. Your display name — the bold line above your bio — accepts the full range.

Do Instagram fonts work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. These are standard Unicode characters built into both systems. A handful of decorative styles resolve through each platform's emoji font and can look different between the two; the styles at the top of this page avoid that.

Will fancy fonts hurt my reach?

Not directly, but styled text is invisible to search inside the app and unreadable to screen readers. Keep your name and key terms in plain text and use styling for accent lines.
